L'eschatologie éclaire d'une lumière nouvelle l'essor, dans tout le Maghreb à la fin du Moyen Âge, du culte des saints, de la figure du saint visionnaire, inspiré et intercesseur, et le développement des pratiques dévotionnelles au Prophète. Interrogeant une documentation très diverse et peu exploitée jusque-là - recueils hagiographiques, traités de théologie, oraisons et prières, dictionnaires biographiques, littérature des visions, consultations juridiques et responsa - l'auteur a mené une véritable enquête historique sur les croyances des contemporains et leurs angoisses liées à la mort et aux Fins dernières, notamment l'ampleur et les formes de leur thésaurisation pour le futur, à une époque marquée par la peur liée à la propagation massive de la peste. Crainte et espérance se disputent les affects des hommes ; certes, la shafd'a (intercession) du Prophète reste acquise à tous les croyants ; mais désormais, une chaîne d'intercesseurs plaideront la cause de quiconque sera entré dans l'amitié d'un saint. Étrangers ", maîtres spirituels, " ravis " en Dieu et visionnaires, les saints du Maghreb, par leur mode parfois abrupt de sainteté, courtisés et craints par les plus puissants, donnent à réfléchir, ici et maintenant. Héritiers des prophètes, ils perpétuent l'histoire du salut et sont les garants de la présence divine dans le monde. Vecteurs d'une espérance ici-bas, ils sont aussi, à part entière, des messagers de l'espérance dans l'au-delà.

How was the use of violence against Muslims explained and justified in medieval Islam? What role did state punishment play in delineating the private from the public sphere? What strategies were deployed to cope with the suffering caused by punishment? These questions are explored in Christian Lange's in-depth study of the phenomenon of punishment, both divine and human, in eleventh-to-thirteenth-century Islamic society. The book examines the relationship between state and society in meting out justice, Muslim attitudes to hell and the punishments that were in store in the afterlife, and the legal dimensions of punishment. The cross-disciplinary approach embraced in this study, which is based on a wide variety of Persian and Arabic sources, sheds light on the interplay between theory and practice in Islamic criminal law, and between executive power and the religious imagination of medieval Muslim society at large.
